How do Austrians pay online?
Checked
Austrian shoppers often pay online with EPS, a bank payment supported by all Austrian banks and accepted by most Austrian online shops, according to Stripe. The shopper picks their bank, signs in and approves. Klarna is also widely offered, with pay later, pay in 3 and financing. Austrians shop online a lot: the ECB found online payments made up 28% of their day-to-day payments in 2024, while cash still leads in shops.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC checkout does not offer EPS today. Austrian shoppers can pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal in euros, or Klarna on one-time orders from €1 to €10,000 when the store's Stripe account is in the EEA, UK or Switzerland.
How EPS works
The shopper chooses their bank, signs in and confirms with the bank's own method, such as a scanner or SMS code. They see straight away whether it worked.
Cash habits
The ECB's 2024 SPACE study found Austria had the euro area's highest preference for cash in shops, at 38%. Online, cards, PayPal, Klarna and EPS do the work.
