How do Australians pay online?

Checked

Australians pay online mostly by card. eftpos is Australia's local debit network, and Stripe says more than 90% of eftpos cards also carry Visa or Mastercard, so they work online; eftpos-only cards don't. Buy now, pay later is popular: Afterpay splits purchases into instalments and Zip is another local option. PayTo lets shoppers approve one-time or recurring bank payments in their banking app, and BECS Direct Debit covers repeat billing.

What PlatformDTC does

PlatformDTC checkout offers Australian shoppers cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal in Australian dollars. Stores with an Australian Stripe account also get Klarna and Afterpay on one-time orders from A$1 to A$4,000. PayTo, BECS Direct Debit and Zip are not offered today.

eftpos and least-cost routing

Stripe processes co-branded eftpos cards over eftpos or over Visa or Mastercard, following Australia's least-cost routing rules and the type of transaction. eftpos works with Apple Pay on Stripe when the charge is in Australian dollars.

Bank payments and pay later

With PayTo the shopper approves a mandate in their banking app and the store usually hears the final result within 60 seconds. BECS Direct Debit takes up to 2 business days to confirm. Zip pays the store upfront and collects from the shopper; on Stripe it is invite-only in the US.

Frequently asked questions

Do eftpos-only cards work online?
No. Stripe says proprietary eftpos-only cards support in-person payments only.
Can a US store offer Afterpay to Australians?
No. Afterpay and Klarna in Australia need the store's Stripe account in Australia and the shopper in Australia, charged in AUD.
