Card issuer response codes (ISO 8583) · Decline codes
What does card decline code R1 mean?
Checked
Code R1 is a Visa issuer response code meaning "stop all future payments": the cardholder has told their bank to block every future payment to this merchant on that card. Checkout.com describes it as a revocation order for the authorization. Visa lists R1 in Category 1, so the merchant must never resubmit the same card. For a subscription store, it effectively means the customer cancelled through their bank.

- PlatformDTC renewal (fixed or Smart retry)
- Never retried; customer asked for a new card
What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC never retries R1. On either retry schedule, fixed or Smart retry, the renewal is held past due rather than retried, the card is marked blocked and the customer gets a link to add a different card if they want to continue. At checkout a Visa R1 is never offered to a backup processor.
Why it happens
The customer revoked recurring payments to your store at their bank, often because they could not find how to cancel or no longer recognised the charge.
What the store can do
Stop billing that card and contact the customer. Clear cancel links and clear billing descriptors reduce R1s.
For developers
On Stripe the raw issuer code arrives in charge.outcome.network_decline_code (here "R1"), next to Stripe's own decline_code. Read it together with the card brand: the same two characters can mean different things on Visa and Mastercard.
