What does card decline code 82 mean?
Checked
Code 82 is an ISO 8583 issuer response code that differs by network. On Visa it means "negative CAM, dCVV, iCVV, or CVV results": a card verification value check failed. Visa lists it in Category 3, data quality, allowing up to 20 reattempts in 30 days with corrected data. On Mastercard, 82 means "invalid transaction/merchant", sent with a Merchant Advice Code; MAC 03 says do not retry.
- Type
- Data error (Visa) / merchant decline (Mastercard)
- Who declined

- Visa category
- Category 3 (data quality, revalidate payment details): up to 20 reattempts in 30 days
- Retry
- Visa: with correct card data; Mastercard: follow the MAC
- Shopper action
- Re-enter card details or use another card
- Merchant action
- Collect correct card data; obey Mastercard advice codes
- PlatformDTC renewal (Smart retry)
- No rule for this raw code; the processor's own code decides
What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC has no rule for a raw 82, so the processor code decides. On either retry schedule a Mastercard Merchant Advice Code 03 or 21 stops retries at once; with Smart retry on, MAC 24 to 30 also sets the exact wait. A hard processor code such as incorrect_cvc stops the renewal and asks the customer for card details.
Why it happens
On Visa, the card verification data did not check out, for example a wrong security code or bad chip data. On Mastercard the issuer rejected the transaction or merchant.
What the shopper can do
Re-enter the card details, especially the security code, or use another card.
For developers
On Stripe the raw issuer code arrives in charge.outcome.network_decline_code (here "82"), next to Stripe's own decline_code. Read it together with the card brand: the same two characters can mean different things on Visa and Mastercard. Mastercard's table lists 82 with MAC 01, 02 and 03 ("invalid transaction or merchant, don't retry" on MAC 03), so always read network_advice_code too.
