What PlatformDTC does
On PlatformDTC, a Checkout.com decline with 20019 is on the reroute list. When the store has PayPal card payments switched on as its backup, checkout immediately offers the shopper that second route instead of a dead end, and PayPal card orders still pass the store's fraud rules. With Smart retry on, a subscription renewal declined with 20019 is retried 2, 5 and 8 days after the first decline.
Why it happens
A timeout or a temporary fault between the network and the bank, or a payment session that expired before it was approved.
What the shopper can do
Press pay again. If it still fails, try a different card or PayPal.
What the store can do
Let the shopper resubmit. Visa allows up to 15 retries in 30 days for category 2, but one or two attempts is the sensible limit at checkout.
For developers
The payment comes back with status Declined, response_code 20019 and a response_summary such as "Re-enter transaction" (Checkout.com notes the text can vary by endpoint). Checkout.com's Visa table puts this code in category 2, which it pairs with recommendation code 02 (try again later); read processing.recommendation_code on the response.
Frequently asked questions
- Is 20019 a decline by the bank?
- It is a bank-side failure to process, not a refusal on the card's merits. A fresh attempt normally works.
- Why did Checkout.com say the transaction expired?
- Checkout.com lists "Transaction has expired" as additional text for 20019, so a session that timed out can produce it.
