Visa 12.6 chargeback: Duplicate Processing or Paid by Other Means explained
Checked
Visa reason code 12.6, Duplicate Processing/Paid by Other Means, means the cardholder was charged more than once for the same purchase (same card, date and amount) or already paid for it another way. The bank has 120 days from the processing date to file. Stripe shows these as 12.6.1 and 12.6.2. Answer with two separate receipts proving two purchases, or proof no other payment was received.

What PlatformDTC does
For a duplicate-charge dispute, PlatformDTC's response states that this is the only charge recorded against the order and that any other charge belongs to a separate order with its own items, address and fulfilment record, alongside the order details and tracking. With "Answer a chargeback automatically" switched on, it sends the response to the bank for you before the deadline.
What it means
Duplicate processing means the same card was charged twice on the same date for the same amount. Paid by other means means the cardholder says they paid for the same purchase by another method, and they must first have tried to resolve it with you.
Why customers file it
A real double charge, two orders placed by accident, or a payment retried by another method after an apparent failure.
Evidence that wins
Under Visa rules every response can also show that you already refunded and the bank ignored it, that the dispute is invalid, or that the cardholder withdrew it.
- Two separate receipts or orders proving two purchases
- Proof no other payment was received for this purchase
- Separate shipping records for each order
How to prevent it
- Disable the pay button after the first click
- Send an itemised receipt for every charge
- Refund an accidental duplicate before the customer calls their bank
For developers
On Stripe the dispute object arrives with reason "duplicate" and the card network's own code in payment_method_details.card.network_reason_code; listen for charge.dispute.created and read evidence_details.due_by for the deadline.
Processing Error (category 12) disputes have a Dispute Response stage: the acquirer answers within 30 days, then the issuer may pre-arbitrate within 30 days of that response.
