Discover 4553 chargeback: Cardholder Disputes Quality of Goods or Services
Checked
Discover reason code 4553, Cardholder Disputes Quality of Goods or Services (older letter code RM), means the cardholder says what they bought was defective, not as described or of poor quality. Stripe files it under general, since it maps no Discover code to product unacceptable. Adyen treats it as defendable: send photos, proof the customer never contacted you or returned the goods, and proof the goods were used.

What PlatformDTC does
For a "not as described" dispute, PlatformDTC's response includes the product description, delivery proof and the refund or return policy the customer saw at checkout, and states that the customer did not contact the store about a problem before disputing. With "Answer a chargeback automatically" switched on, it sends the response to the bank for you before the deadline.
What it means
The cardholder accepts they bought from you but disputes the quality.
Older Discover documentation pairs 4553 with the letter code RM.
Why customers file it
Products that do not match photos or descriptions, damage in transit, or buyer's remorse.
Evidence that wins
Respond to every Discover chargeback, even small ones, as Discover itself advises. Send:
- The listing and photos of the goods as sold
- Proof the customer did not contact you or return the goods
- Proof the goods were used
- Your return policy and any offer to replace or refund
How to prevent it
- Describe goods accurately with real photos
- Offer a return or replacement before the customer goes to the bank
For developers
On Stripe the dispute object arrives with reason "general" and the card network's own code in payment_method_details.card.network_reason_code; listen for charge.dispute.created and read evidence_details.due_by for the deadline.
Discover does not publish its dispute rules publicly; the codes and names here are the ones Stripe reports, and the defences come from processor guides.
