Discover 4586 chargeback: Altered Amount explained
Checked
Discover reason code 4586, Altered Amount (older letter code AW), means the cardholder says the amount charged was changed from the amount they agreed to. Fiserv's guide gives the issuer 120 days. Answer with a draft or record showing no amount error, proof the cardholder agreed to the full amount, or proof of a corrective credit. Showing the final total before payment prevents it.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC keeps the itemised order the shopper approved, with discounts, shipping, tax and total, and emails subscribers before a renewal at a different price. PlatformDTC answers this kind of dispute with its standard evidence pack built from the order: customer name, email, IP address, billing and shipping address, items bought, carrier, tracking and ship date, the refund policy, and any refund already issued. With "Answer a chargeback automatically" switched on, it sends the response to the bank for you before the deadline.
What it means
The cardholder says the amount was altered after they agreed to it.
Older Discover documentation pairs 4586 with the letter code AW.
Why customers file it
Totals changed after checkout, or added fees.
Evidence that wins
Respond to every Discover chargeback, even small ones, as Discover itself advises. Send:
- A draft or order record showing no amount error
- Proof the cardholder agreed to the full amount
- Proof of a corrective credit
How to prevent it
- Show the final total before payment
- Notify subscribers of price changes before renewal
For developers
On Stripe the dispute object arrives with reason "general" and the card network's own code in payment_method_details.card.network_reason_code; listen for charge.dispute.created and read evidence_details.due_by for the deadline.
Discover does not publish its dispute rules publicly; the codes and names here are the ones Stripe reports, and the defences come from processor guides.
