Discover 4541 (AP) chargeback: Recurring Payment cancelled, and how to win it
Checked
Discover reason code 4541, Recurring Payments (older letter code AP), means the cardholder says a recurring charge was billed after they cancelled. Fiserv's guide says the issuer must wait 15 days after the cancellation and the cardholder must first try to resolve it with you, then 120 days apply. Win with proof the cardholder cancelled on a different date or did not follow your cancellation policy, plus proof they used the service.

What PlatformDTC does
For a "cancelled subscription" dispute, PlatformDTC's response states that no cancellation was recorded before the renewal, gives the subscription reference, and quotes the cancellation policy the customer saw at checkout. Before a first renewal it emails the customer the charge date, and it stops the subscription the moment any dispute opens. With "Answer a chargeback automatically" switched on, it sends the response to the bank for you before the deadline.
What it means
The cardholder says they cancelled and the recurring charge continued.
Older Discover documentation pairs 4541 with the letter code AP.
Why customers file it
Cancellations not processed in time, forgotten subscriptions, or trials converting to paid plans.
Evidence that wins
Respond to every Discover chargeback, even small ones, as Discover itself advises. Send:
- Proof the cardholder cancelled on a different date, or not according to your policy
- The cancellation policy the cardholder accepted
- A billing notice sent before the charge (Adyen suggests 10 days before)
- Proof the service was used after the claimed cancellation
How to prevent it
- Make cancelling easy and confirm it in writing
- Send a notice before renewals
- Stop billing the moment a cancellation is received
For developers
On Stripe the dispute object arrives with reason "subscription_canceled" and the card network's own code in payment_method_details.card.network_reason_code; listen for charge.dispute.created and read evidence_details.due_by for the deadline.
Discover does not publish its dispute rules publicly; the codes and names here are the ones Stripe reports, and the defences come from processor guides.
