Discover 4865 chargeback: Paid by Other Means explained
Checked
Discover reason code 4865, Paid by Other Means (older letter code PM), means the cardholder says they already paid for this purchase another way, so the Discover charge is a second payment. The issuer has 120 days to file under Fiserv's guide. Answer with proof the purchase was not paid another way, proof the two payments were separate transactions, or a cardholder-signed agreement to the card sale.

What PlatformDTC does
For a duplicate-charge dispute, PlatformDTC's response states that this is the only charge recorded against the order and that any other charge belongs to a separate order with its own items, address and fulfilment record, alongside the order details and tracking. With "Answer a chargeback automatically" switched on, it sends the response to the bank for you before the deadline.
What it means
The cardholder says one purchase was paid twice by two methods.
Older Discover documentation pairs 4865 with the letter code PM.
Why customers file it
A failed payment retried another way, or two orders mistaken for one.
Evidence that wins
Respond to every Discover chargeback, even small ones, as Discover itself advises. Send:
- Proof the purchase was not paid by other means
- Proof the payments were separate transactions
- A cardholder-signed agreement to the card sale
How to prevent it
- Show a clear confirmation after payment
- Refund a second payment for the same order promptly
For developers
On Stripe the dispute object arrives with reason "duplicate" and the card network's own code in payment_method_details.card.network_reason_code; listen for charge.dispute.created and read evidence_details.due_by for the deadline.
Discover does not publish its dispute rules publicly; the codes and names here are the ones Stripe reports, and the defences come from processor guides.
