How do Dutch shoppers pay online?

Checked

Dutch shoppers overwhelmingly pay online with iDEAL, which sends them to their own bank to approve the payment. The ECB's 2024 SPACE study found e-payment solutions, iDEAL included, made up 76% of online payments in the Netherlands. iDEAL now belongs to the European Payments Initiative and is turning into Wero: merchants show 'iDEAL | Wero' from early 2026 and switch to Wero during 2026 and 2027. Cards, PayPal and Klarna cover the rest.

What PlatformDTC does

PlatformDTC checkout does not offer iDEAL | Wero today. Dutch shoppers can pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal in euros, or Klarna on one-time orders from €1 to €5,000 when the store's Stripe account is in the EEA, UK or Switzerland.

How iDEAL works

At checkout the shopper picks iDEAL, is sent to their bank's app or website, and approves. The store knows right away whether it worked. All major Dutch banks are members of Currence, which has run iDEAL.

When EPI completed its purchase of iDEAL in October 2023, it said iDEAL handled 3.5 million transactions per day.

What the move to Wero means

Stripe says merchants must rebrand to 'iDEAL | Wero' in the first quarter of 2026, then move to Wero during 2026 and 2027 to keep taking Dutch bank payments.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell in the Netherlands without iDEAL?
You can, but iDEAL-style bank payments are what most Dutch shoppers expect. PlatformDTC covers Dutch shoppers with cards, wallets, PayPal and Klarna, not iDEAL.
Why is Klarna capped at €5,000 in the Netherlands on PlatformDTC?
PlatformDTC follows Klarna's Dutch limits, so it shows Klarna on carts up to €5,000 there, the top of Klarna's pay later and pay in 3 ranges.
