How do Japanese shoppers pay online?
Checked
Japanese shoppers pay online by card, including Japan's own JCB, with cash at convenience stores, and with PayPay. Konbini payments give the shopper a payment code to take to a FamilyMart, Lawson, Ministop or Seicomart and pay in cash, from 120 to 300,000 yen. PayPay, which Stripe calls a popular digital payment platform and mobile wallet in Japan, takes payments up to 1,000,000 yen. PayPal also works in yen.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC checkout does not offer konbini payments or PayPay today. Japanese shoppers can pay by card, including JCB where the store's Stripe account accepts it, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or the store's PayPal in yen.
How konbini payments work
After checkout the shopper gets payment codes and a confirmation number, pays cash at the store, and the store is told immediately. Funds are ready for payout after 4 business days. Konbini doesn't support repeat billing.
JCB on Stripe
Stripe accounts in Japan, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland, the UK, the US and the EEA (except Iceland) can accept JCB. 3D Secure for JCB is supported for accounts in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland, the UK and the EEA.
Frequently asked questions

- Can Japanese shoppers subscribe with PayPay?
- Not on Stripe; PayPay and konbini don't support repeat billing. On PlatformDTC subscribers pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal.
