MCC codes for general and specialty retail

These codes cover stores that sell many kinds of goods, and specialty lines with no narrower home. 5999 is the catch-all for specialty retail, and Visa allows it only when no specific code fits. Department, discount and variety stores have their own codes, and marketplaces with many sellers can register for 5262. Pet supplies use 5995 and car parts 5533.

When 5999 is right, and when it is not
Visa's manual says miscellaneous codes, usually ending in 99, may only be assigned when no other code applies. Its examples for 5999 include beauty supply stores, collectibles and memorabilia, party supplies, picture framing, sunglasses and trophy stores.
Visa requires 3D Secure on online 5999 sales for merchants located in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia and the Republic of Korea.
Frequently asked questions
- Is it safe to use 5999 for everything?
- No. Visa says a miscellaneous code may only be used when no specific code describes the business, and Visa can require an acquirer to correct a wrong code. Use the specific code for what most of your sales are.
- What MCC does a dropshipping store use?
- Dropshipping is a way of fulfilling orders, not a category. Use the code for what you sell most, for example 5691 for clothing or 5995 for pet supplies. 5999 fits only when no specific code covers your main line.
