Visa Rapid Dispute Resolution (RDR)
Updated
Visa Rapid Dispute Resolution is an automated service where the merchant sets rules in advance and matching disputes are resolved with a refund before becoming chargebacks.
RDR works through the merchant's acquirer. The merchant sets predefined rules for which disputes to accept, and when a cardholder dispute matches, it is resolved without manual evidence.
Visa's merchant guide warns about refunds: after accepting an RDR request, the merchant should not issue a separate refund for the same payment, because the acceptance already moves the money and a second credit can pay the customer twice.
RDR matters for monitoring programmes. Visa's VAMP fact sheet says disputes resolved through pre-dispute solutions are excluded from the VAMP ratio, subject to data timing.
Frequently asked questions
- Does an RDR refund count as a chargeback?
- Disputes resolved through pre-dispute solutions such as RDR are excluded from Visa's VAMP ratio, according to Visa's fact sheet, subject to the timing of Visa's data extract.
- Should I refund after an RDR case?
- No. Visa's guide says accepting the RDR already moves the money, so a separate refund risks paying the customer twice.
