What does the Stripe reenter_transaction decline code mean?
Checked
The Stripe decline code reenter_transaction means the payment couldn't be processed by the card's issuer for an unknown reason. As the name says, Stripe's next step is to attempt the payment again; if it still can't be processed, the customer needs to contact their card issuer. It is a soft, usually temporary decline, not a sign the card is bad.
- Type
- Soft decline (temporary)
- Who declined
- The card's bank, without a reason

- Shopper action

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC counts reenter_transaction as a decline another processor may accept, so at checkout a store with PayPal card payments as its backup can offer the shopper that route. With Smart retry on it is a temporary decline on renewals: retried 2, 5 and 8 days after the first decline, never more than 4 attempts, with the customer told their bank couldn't be reached.
Why it happens
The bank received the request but could not finish processing it, and asked for it to be sent again. Temporary system issues are the usual cause.
What the shopper can do
Press pay again. If the card keeps failing, try another card or contact your bank.
For developers
decline_code = reenter_transaction. On Visa the raw code 19 means "Re-enter transaction", Category 2, reattempt permitted up to 20 times in 30 days. Resend with the same data: Visa's rules forbid changing data elements such as the MCC or POS entry mode on a reattempt.
Frequently asked questions
- Is it safe to resubmit after reenter_transaction?
- Yes. Stripe's guidance is to attempt the payment again. Use the same payment details; there is no need to change anything.
- What if reenter_transaction keeps happening?
- After a couple of failed attempts, the customer should contact their bank or use another payment method.
