Link by Stripe: what it is and how it works at checkout
Checked
Link is Stripe's digital wallet. A shopper saves their card, bank account and address once; at any business that uses Link, they are recognised by email, phone number or a browser cookie, confirm with a one-time code, and Link fills in their details. Depending on location they can pay by card, US bank account or buy-now-pay-later. Stripe says Link payments settle to the store's balance on the same timeline as card payments, whatever the funding.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC checkout does not show Link, either in the express row or in the card form. Instead, DTCPay, PlatformDTC's own one-tap wallet, recognises a returning shopper whose card is already saved in the PlatformDTC network and lets them pay in one tap.
How Link recognises a shopper
Link checks whether the shopper is enrolled using their email address, phone number or a browser cookie. It sends a one-time passcode, and once the shopper enters it, Link fills in their saved card or bank details and shipping address. After enrolling, shoppers can add backup payment methods and change addresses, and they manage everything at link.com, which also has its own customer support.
What it means for your store
Every Link payment is confirmed right away and lands in your Stripe balance on the card payout schedule, even when the shopper paid from a bank account. Stripe says bank payments through Link can cost less than cards. Link works in Stripe Checkout, Payment Links, Elements and Invoicing, and is switched on in Stripe's payment method settings.
Frequently asked questions
- Why doesn't my PlatformDTC checkout show Link?
- PlatformDTC turned Link off and uses DTCPay instead, its own one-tap wallet for shoppers whose card is already saved in the PlatformDTC network. Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal stay in the express row.
- Do bank payments through Link reach me later than card payments?
- No. Stripe says Link confirms every payment immediately and settles it to your Stripe balance on the same timeline as card payments, whatever the shopper used to pay.
- Where can't shoppers use Link?
- Stripe says Link isn't available in India, and its Payment Element doesn't show Link in Brazil and Thailand.
