How do Brazilians pay online? Pix, Boleto and cards
Checked
Brazilian shoppers pay online with Pix, Boleto and cards. Pix is a real-time payment system built by the Central Bank of Brazil: the shopper scans a QR code or copies a Pix string into their banking app and approves. Boleto is an official voucher, regulated by the same central bank, that the shopper pays at a bank, ATM, authorized agency or in online banking before it expires. Cards and PayPal in reais round out the list.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC checkout does not offer Pix or Boleto today. Shoppers in Brazil can pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or the store's PayPal in reais; a store whose Stripe account is in Brazil can't take American Express cards.
Pix for a store owner
Pix confirms immediately and settles to Stripe accounts in up to two business days. Refunds can be sent for 90 days and usually arrive in minutes. Disputes are limited to cases such as fraud, go through the banks' Special Refund Mechanism (MED), and can't be contested.
Businesses outside Brazil can take Pix from Brazilian shoppers on Stripe, up to 3,000 USD per day and 10,000 USD per month per customer. The shopper pays a 3.5% IOF tax unless the store absorbs it.
Boleto for a store owner
A Boleto voucher expires after 3 days by default and is confirmed about one business day after the shopper pays. Boleto has no refunds or chargebacks through Stripe, and only Stripe accounts in Brazil can accept it.
Frequently asked questions
- Can a store outside Brazil accept Pix?
- On Stripe, yes: Stripe lists accounts in the US, Canada, Europe, Australia and Singapore. PlatformDTC checkout doesn't offer Pix today.
- Is Boleto refundable?
- Not through Stripe. Boleto supports neither refunds nor chargebacks, so stores settle any return directly with the customer.
