How do shoppers in Mexico pay online?
Checked
Shoppers in Mexico pay online by card, often splitting the cost across monthly statements with meses sin intereses (interest-free installments), and in cash through OXXO. With OXXO, the shopper gets a voucher with a reference number and pays it at an OXXO convenience store, up to 10,000 Mexican pesos. Card installments are handled by the shopper's bank, while the store is paid in full. PayPal also works in pesos.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC checkout offers shoppers in Mexico cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and the store's PayPal in Mexican pesos, subscriptions included. OXXO vouchers and meses sin intereses installments are not offered today, and Klarna and Afterpay don't serve Mexico.
How OXXO works
At checkout the shopper gets a voucher with a 32-digit reference, takes it to any OXXO store and pays cash. Vouchers expire after 5 days by default (1 to 7 days is possible) and the store gets confirmation by the next business day.
OXXO payments can't be refunded and can't be disputed, so a store that wants to give money back needs its own process. OXXO also can't be used for repeat billing.
Meses sin intereses
Installments are a credit card feature in Mexico: the shopper splits a purchase over several statements, the store gets the full amount minus a fee, and the bank collects over time. Stripe supports it for Stripe Mexico accounts.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I refund an OXXO payment?
- Not through OXXO. Stripe says OXXO payments can't be refunded, so stores credit customers some other way.
- Does PayPal work for Mexican shoppers on PlatformDTC?
- Yes, when the store charges in Mexican pesos or another of PayPal's 22 currencies, PayPal shows in the express row.
