Discover 4752 chargeback: Does Not Recognize explained
Checked
Discover reason code 4752, Does Not Recognize (older letter code AA), means the cardholder does not recognise the charge on their statement. Fiserv's guide gives the issuer 120 calendar days from the processing date, and says it cannot be reversed if the merchant failed to answer a documentation request. Win with a legible receipt describing the goods, a signed or imprinted draft, or proof a credit was issued.

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC answers this kind of dispute with its standard evidence pack built from the order: customer name, email, IP address, billing and shipping address, items bought, carrier, tracking and ship date, the refund policy, and any refund already issued. With "Answer a chargeback automatically" switched on, it sends the response to the bank for you before the deadline.
What it means
The cardholder sees a charge they cannot place and asks their bank about it.
Older Discover documentation pairs 4752 with the letter code AA.
Why customers file it
A statement descriptor that does not match the store name, a family member's purchase, or a forgotten order.
Evidence that wins
Respond to every Discover chargeback, even small ones, as Discover itself advises. Send:
- A legible receipt with a description of the goods or services
- A signed draft, imprint or PIN record
- Proof a credit was issued
How to prevent it
- Use your store name or website as the statement descriptor
- Email a receipt with every charge
- Answer documentation requests promptly
For developers
On Stripe the dispute object arrives with reason "general" and the card network's own code in payment_method_details.card.network_reason_code; listen for charge.dispute.created and read evidence_details.due_by for the deadline.
Discover does not publish its dispute rules publicly; the codes and names here are the ones Stripe reports, and the defences come from processor guides.
