Insufficient funds decline (code 51)

Updated

An insufficient funds decline, response code 51, means the account behind the card could not cover the amount at that moment, so a later retry may succeed.

Code 51 is the clearest soft decline. The card is valid; the balance or credit line was not enough when you asked. Debit and prepaid cards hit it most, because they spend real money rather than credit.

Visa puts 51 in category 2, "issuer cannot approve at this time", with up to 20 reattempts allowed in 30 days. Visa's October 2026 rules also bar issuers from sending 51 in reply to an account verification, a zero-amount check. Mastercard can attach a merchant advice code to a funds decline telling you how long to wait before retrying.

Timing matters more than count. On PlatformDTC, a renewal declined for insufficient funds is retried up to six times, on days 2, 5, 8, 13 and 18 after the first decline, each moved onto the subscriber's payday when one falls within seven days, and never more than once a day. Prepaid cards get one payday retry only.

Frequently asked questions

What does decline code 51 mean?
Not sufficient funds: the account could not cover the amount when the bank checked. The card is still valid, so the same card can work later.
When should I retry an insufficient funds decline?
When money is likely to be back, typically around payday, rather than minutes later. Retrying at once usually fails again and counts toward the network's reattempt limits.
