A worked month

Assumptions: Stripe's standard pricing, an average order of NOK 500, every payment successful, no refunds or disputes. Each line is rounded to the cent.

NOK 100,000.00 in 200 orders, all Norwegian cards: 2.4% of NOK 100,000.00 = NOK 2,400.00, plus 200 × NOK 2.00 = NOK 400.00. Total NOK 2,800.00, or 2.80% of sales.

NOK 500,000.00 in 1,000 orders, all Norwegian cards: 2.4% of NOK 500,000.00 = NOK 12,000.00, plus 1,000 × NOK 2.00 = NOK 2,000.00. Total NOK 14,000.00, or 2.80% of sales.

If a fifth of that NOK 500,000 month came from international cards at 3.25% + NOK 2.00, with no currency conversion, the bill would be NOK 11,200.00 on the domestic NOK 400,000 plus NOK 3,650.00 on the international NOK 100,000: NOK 14,850.00 in total.

What raises your fees

The headline rate covers the cheapest case. These push the real cost up:

  • Cards from abroad — European Economic Area cards: 2.4% + NOK 2.00.
  • Cards from abroad — international cards (outside the EEA): 3.25% + NOK 2.00.
  • Currency conversion: +2% when the payment is in a currency other than the one you are paid out in.
  • Disputes: NOK 200.00 for each dispute received, plus NOK 200.00 if you counter it by hand (given back if you win).
  • Small orders: the fixed NOK 2.00 weighs more on a small basket. On a NOK 100 order, 2.4% + NOK 2.00 is 4.40% of the sale.

For developers

The fee Stripe actually took on a payment is on that charge's balance transaction (fee and fee_details), in your settlement currency. Read it from there rather than recomputing it from this page, because card type and conversion change it per payment.
