A worked month

Assumptions: Stripe's standard pricing, an average order of CHF 50, every payment successful, no refunds or disputes. Each line is rounded to the cent.

CHF 10,000.00 in 200 orders, all Swiss cards: 2.9% of CHF 10,000.00 = CHF 290.00, plus 200 × CHF 0.30 = CHF 60.00. Total CHF 350.00, or 3.50% of sales.

CHF 50,000.00 in 1,000 orders, all Swiss cards: 2.9% of CHF 50,000.00 = CHF 1,450.00, plus 1,000 × CHF 0.30 = CHF 300.00. Total CHF 1,750.00, or 3.50% of sales.

If a fifth of that CHF 50,000 month came from international cards at 3.25% + CHF 0.30, with no currency conversion, the bill would be CHF 1,400.00 on the domestic CHF 40,000 plus CHF 385.00 on the international CHF 10,000: CHF 1,785.00 in total.

What raises your fees

The headline rate covers the cheapest case. These push the real cost up:

  • Cards from abroad — international cards: 3.25% + CHF 0.30.
  • Currency conversion: +2% when the payment is in a currency other than the one you are paid out in.
  • Disputes: CHF 20.00 for each dispute received, plus CHF 20.00 if you counter it by hand (given back if you win).
  • Small orders: the fixed CHF 0.30 weighs more on a small basket. On a CHF 10 order, 2.9% + CHF 0.30 is 5.90% of the sale.

For developers

The fee Stripe actually took on a payment is on that charge's balance transaction (fee and fee_details), in your settlement currency. Read it from there rather than recomputing it from this page, because card type and conversion change it per payment.
