A worked month

Assumptions: Stripe's standard pricing, an average order of R$250, every payment successful, no refunds or disputes. Each line is rounded to the cent.

R$50,000.00 in 200 orders, all domestic cards: 3.99% of R$50,000.00 = R$1,995.00, plus 200 × R$0.39 = R$78.00. Total R$2,073.00, or 4.15% of sales.

R$250,000.00 in 1,000 orders, all domestic cards: 3.99% of R$250,000.00 = R$9,975.00, plus 1,000 × R$0.39 = R$390.00. Total R$10,365.00, or 4.15% of sales.

If a fifth of that R$250,000 month came from international cards at 5.99% + R$0.39, with no currency conversion, the bill would be R$8,292.00 on the domestic R$200,000 plus R$3,073.00 on the international R$50,000: R$11,365.00 in total.

What raises your fees

The headline rate covers the cheapest case. These push the real cost up:

Stripe's Brazilian page applies the 2% international add-on to the amount after conversion to reais and lists no separate currency conversion fee.

  • Cards from abroad — international cards: 2% on top of the domestic rate (5.99% + R$0.39 in total).
  • Disputes: R$55.00 for each dispute received, plus R$55.00 if you counter it by hand (given back if you win).
  • Small orders: the fixed R$0.39 weighs more on a small basket. On a R$50 order, 3.99% + R$0.39 is 4.78% of the sale.

For developers

The fee Stripe actually took on a payment is on that charge's balance transaction (fee and fee_details), in your settlement currency. Read it from there rather than recomputing it from this page, because card type and conversion change it per payment.
