What are PayPal's fees in Japan?

What PlatformDTC does
PlatformDTC connects your own PayPal business account in Japan: the PayPal button at checkout, and PayPal card processing for cards typed into your checkout. PlatformDTC adds no fee to those sales, so the ¥1,500,000 month above costs the same ¥62,000 on PlatformDTC, with no plan fee. PayPal card processing can also act as the backup when a card is declined on PlatformDTC Payments or your own Stripe account.
Every rate
Every rate below is copied from PayPal's fee page for Japan (the page is in Japanese), read on 31 October 2026. Each percentage is charged on the full payment, and the fixed fee of ¥40 is added to each payment received in Japanese yen. Payments in other currencies carry that currency's own fixed fee from PayPal's table.

A worked month
Assumption: an average order of ¥7,500, every payment in Japanese yen, no refunds or disputes.
¥1,500,000 of sales in 200 domestic PayPal payments: 3.6% of ¥1,500,000 = ¥54,000; 200 × ¥40 = ¥8,000; total ¥62,000 (4.13% of sales).
¥7,500,000 of sales in 1,000 domestic PayPal payments: 3.6% of ¥7,500,000 = ¥270,000; 1,000 × ¥40 = ¥40,000; total ¥310,000 (4.13% of sales).
The table adds the same months with a fifth of sales coming from outside Japan, where PayPal adds 0.5% to the percentage on those payments only.

What raises your fees
The headline 3.6% + ¥40 is the floor for a domestic PayPal payment in Japan. These push the real cost up:
- Payments from abroad: 0.5% from outside Japan.
- Currency conversion: 3% above the base exchange rate whenever PayPal converts the money.
- Disputes: ¥1,630 each, or ¥3,260 once your dispute volume counts as high.
- Card chargebacks: ¥1,300 each.
- Small orders: the fixed ¥40 weighs more on a small basket than on a large one.
