A worked month

Assumptions: Stripe's standard pricing, an average order of A$50, every payment successful, no refunds or disputes. Each line is rounded to the cent.

A$10,000.00 in 200 orders, all domestic cards: 1.65% of A$10,000.00 = A$165.00, plus 200 × A$0.30 = A$60.00. Total A$225.00, or 2.25% of sales.

A$50,000.00 in 1,000 orders, all domestic cards: 1.65% of A$50,000.00 = A$825.00, plus 1,000 × A$0.30 = A$300.00. Total A$1,125.00, or 2.25% of sales.

If a fifth of that A$50,000 month came from international cards at 3.5% + A$0.30, with no currency conversion, the bill would be A$900.00 on the domestic A$40,000 plus A$410.00 on the international A$10,000: A$1,310.00 in total.

What raises your fees

The headline rate covers the cheapest case. These push the real cost up:

Stripe's Australian page says lower international pricing takes effect from 1 April 2027.

  • Cards from abroad — international cards: 3.5% + A$0.30.
  • Currency conversion: +2% when the payment is in a currency other than the one you are paid out in.
  • Disputes: A$25.00 for each dispute received, plus A$25.00 if you counter it by hand (given back if you win).
  • Small orders: the fixed A$0.30 weighs more on a small basket. On a A$10 order, 1.65% + A$0.30 is 4.70% of the sale.

For developers

The fee Stripe actually took on a payment is on that charge's balance transaction (fee and fee_details), in your settlement currency. Read it from there rather than recomputing it from this page, because card type and conversion change it per payment.
