v1.22

PayPal subscription payments show what was bought

PayPal subscription renewals and subscription add-ons now list the products, shipping and discount in PayPal. Before, PayPal showed only the amount.

In PayPal, your activity page and your customer's receipt showed renewals as an amount with no products. A customer who doesn't recognise a payment is more likely to dispute it, and a dispute on a payment that names no products is harder to answer.

Fixed

  • Items on renewal payments. Each PayPal subscription renewal now lists the products, their quantities and unit prices, shipping, and any subscription or coupon discount. It also gets a description such as Subscription renewal — 1× For Him. This applies both to subscribers who checked out with PayPal and to subscriptions imported with a PayPal billing agreement.
  • Items on subscription add-ons. A one-time add-on bought from the customer portal and paid with PayPal names the add-on.
  • Items on shipment tracking. Tracking numbers sent to PayPal now list what the shipment contains, taken from the order. This also covers renewals that were charged before this change, once they ship.

Good to know

  • Amounts are unchanged. Only the description of the payment changed.
  • A completed PayPal payment can't be edited. Renewals charged before this change keep their bare amount on the payment itself; their items appear on the tracking information once they ship.
  • The item list must add up to the charge. If a subscription's products, shipping and discount don't add up exactly to the renewal amount, the payment names the products in its description instead of listing them. PayPal would otherwise reject the renewal.
