Sell in person on the same platform
Take card and cash payments at your counter. Every in-person sale becomes an order in the same Orders list as your online store, against the same catalog and the same customers.
What you can do at the counter
Take payment
- Card payments on a smart reader
- The customer taps, inserts or swipes on a countertop reader. If a card is declined, they can try again on the same sale.
- Cash, with change worked out
- Enter what the customer handed over and the register shows the change due. The sale is recorded against the open drawer.
- Split tender
- Take part of a sale on a card and the rest in cash. The sale completes once the payments cover the total.
Build the sale
- Your catalog and custom items
- Search the products you already sell online, or add a custom item with its own name and price for anything that is not in the catalog.
- Cart discounts
- Take a percentage or a fixed amount off the whole sale, with a reason recorded against it.
- Tax per location
- Each location carries its own tax rate, applied to every sale rung up there.
- Customers at the counter
- Attach a customer you already have, or create one with an email or phone number while the sale is open.
Run the counter
- Cash drawer
- Open the drawer with a counted float, record pay-ins and pay-outs during the day, and close it by counting. The close shows expected cash, counted cash and the difference.
- Locations and readers
- Add every shop you sell from as its own location, and pair as many readers to each one as you need.
After the sale
- Email and printed receipts
- Send the receipt to the customer’s email or print it at the counter. It carries your store’s name, not a processor’s.
- Refunds to card or cash
- Refund to the card the customer paid with, or in cash from the drawer, and choose whether the items go back into stock.
How it works
Set up a location
Name the shop, enter its address and its tax rate. Card payments use your PlatformDTC Payments account, so that needs to be active first.
Pair a reader
On the reader, generate a pairing code from its settings. Enter the code in the Point of Sale section of your dashboard and give the reader a name.
Open the drawer and sell
Count the opening float, then ring up sales from your catalog. Take card, cash or both, and hand over a receipt.
One orders list. One customer list.
An in-person sale is written as a normal order in the same Orders list you already use for online orders, tagged Point of Sale so you can tell the channels apart. A refund taken at the counter updates that same order.
A customer created at the counter is a customer in your store, not a separate retail record. Their in-person orders sit next to anything they have bought online.
Card payments settle to the same PlatformDTC Payments account as your online checkout.
Pricing
In-person card payments are charged at your plan’s card rate — the same rate as card payments taken online. Cash is recorded rather than processed, so no card rate applies to it.
Card readers are supplied through our sales team. Ask for a reader or compare plan card rates.

Frequently asked questions
- Which card readers does PlatformDTC POS work with?
- Countertop smart readers that we supply. Readers are arranged through our sales team rather than bought off a shelf, and each one is paired to a location in your dashboard using a pairing code generated from the reader's own settings. A location can have more than one reader, and a reader can be renamed or removed from the dashboard at any time.
- Does POS work without an internet connection?
- No. PlatformDTC POS needs an internet connection for every sale, card or cash, because the sale is priced, paid and written as an order on the platform rather than on the device. If the connection drops in the middle of a card payment, the payment is checked again before it is treated as failed, and a retry reuses the same payment instead of starting a second one.
- What does it cost to take payments in person?
- In-person card payments are charged at your plan's card rate, the same rate your online card payments carry, so there is no separate retail rate to track. Cash is recorded rather than processed, so no card rate applies to it. Card readers are arranged through sales.
- What needs to be in place before I can sell?
- An active PlatformDTC Payments account, because card payments run on it and settle to it. A location has to be in the same country as that account, and in-person sales are taken in its currency. Then pair a reader to the location and open its cash drawer with a counted float.
- What happens to stock when I sell or refund in person?
- If the location is linked to one of your inventory locations and the product has a stock level there, a completed sale reduces it. When you refund, you choose whether the items go back into stock. Custom items are not catalog products, so they never change stock.
