v1.29
Declines retried by what the bank said
Declined renewals are now retried according to the response code the customer's bank sent: soft declines are retried later, vague refusals are retried once, and permanent declines are not retried at all.
Changed
- The bank's own response code is read. Card declines are sorted using both the decline reason and the raw code from the customer's bank. If either says the card must not be retried, it isn't.
- Soft declines on one schedule. Insufficient funds, amount or frequency limits, and temporary bank or network errors are all retried 2, 5 and 8 days after the first decline — 4 attempts in total. Temporary errors were previously retried 1, 2, 3 and 4 days apart.
- "Do not honor" and generic declines are retried once. One retry 48 to 72 hours later; if it is declined too, the subscription goes Past due and the customer is asked for a new payment method. These were previously retried up to 4 times.
- Suspected fraud is never retried. A decline the bank marks as suspected fraud (code 59) is no longer retried, even when it is reported as "do not honor". The same applies to lost, stolen or restricted cards, closed accounts, invalid card details, cards not permitted for the purchase, revoked authorizations and previous chargebacks.
- Queued retries follow the new rules. Retries already scheduled under the old rules are checked again before they run, and are not sent if the new rules would not have scheduled them.
Fixed
- Last-retry notice. With Smart AI retry, customers were told "we'll try again" before the final retry instead of receiving the last-retry notice.
