Product photos load at the size they are shown
Product photos now download at the size they appear on screen, as AVIF or WebP, instead of the full original file.
Changed for shoppers
- Faster product pages. On a test product page with four 1024px PNG photos, the page downloaded 3.9 MB of product images before; it now downloads 87 KB on desktop and 104 KB on an iPhone. On a throttled phone connection (the one Google PageSpeed uses) the main photo appears after 7.2 s instead of 28 s, and the thumbnails no longer sit grey while a full-size file decodes.
- Sharp on every screen. Each photo comes in several widths, and the browser picks the one that fits the screen and its pixel density. A photo is never enlarged beyond its original size.
- Same in cart and checkout. Cart drawer, cart page and checkout order-summary thumbnails use the small versions too. A personalised preview from an app still replaces the product photo once it has loaded.
