v1.193

Every way to pay on the update payment method page

The update payment method page now looks exactly like your checkout and shows every way your store can bill a subscription, on one screen: a card, PayPal, and Apple Pay or Google Pay.

New

  • Pay with PayPal for every subscriber when your store has PayPal connected, including subscribers whose card was declined. Before, a card subscriber could only type another card. After they approve at PayPal, the subscription renews on their PayPal account.
  • Apple Pay or Google Pay is its own choice in the list, on phones and browsers that have it.
  • Your checkout's look: your logo, colours, trust message and store footer (policies, contact), the same Express checkout box (PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay) and the same Payment box. Customers recognise the page they bought on.
  • Order summary on the right (on phones, behind Show order summary, as in checkout): the product with its photo and price ("every month"). An on-hold subscription shows Due today and Future charges. An active one shows its next payment date.
  • The card button is your checkout's pay button in your button colour and names the amount: Pay $36.00. On phones it stays at the bottom of the screen once the payment box scrolls away.
  • Subscribers who pay with PayPal can also save a card from the same page.

Changed

  • Payment options are your checkout's list (Credit card, PayPal), each with its brand logos. The chosen one opens its form. The account menu is hidden on this page so nothing distracts from paying.
  • The on-hold warning says which payment didn't go through and that the next order ships right after paying.
  • After saving, the page says whether the payment went through, PayPal included.
  • Built for phones first, where most customers open these emails.
  • A subscription without a product photo shows its title alone, with no empty tile.

Worth knowing

  • Switching between card and PayPal doesn't change the subscription's price.
  • A subscription on hold is paid right away with whatever the subscriber saves, and they see whether it went through.
For developers
  • GET /api/v1/customers/subscriptions/{id}/payment-options now answers paypal_available: true for any subscription whose store offers PayPal, not only moved ones. POST …/setup-intent and POST …/payment-method accept provider: "paypal" for card subscriptions. Saving moves the subscription to payment_provider: "paypal" and clears the old card.
